Iran says it will "punish" Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

The US will deploy additional warships and fighter jets to the Middle East to help defend Israel from possible attacks by Iran and its proxies, the Pentagon said.

Missile defence forces were placed on a state of increased readiness to deploy, the Pentagon said, adding that its commitment to defend Israel was “ironclad”.

Iran’s leader Ayatollah Khamenei has vowed “harsh punishment” against Israel for the assassination of Haniyeh.

Haniyeh, 62, was widely considered Hamas’s overall leader and played a key role in negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza war.

    For a fight that everyone thinks is Israel vs Palestinians, Iran sure has its dick stuck into the middle of it a lot.

    It’s almost like the Palestinians are being funded by Iran to attack Israel in a proxy war.

    Oh right, that’s exactly what is happening.

      I mean the US is supporting Israel in that proxy war. Just like we trained freedom fighters in Afghanistan and helped create the Taliban. Just like Russia did to Castro in Cuba.

        It’s Israel vs Iran, with Palestinians being used as pawns.

        The whole world is watching a proxy war and getting mad at Israel instead of getting mad at Iran.

        Just to be clear, Iran does not care about the plight of the Palestinians at all, they just want to weaken Israel.

          I view it more as a war between right wing religious fanatics who lack popular support or legitimacy against civilians. Israeli and Iranian leaders should be tried at The Hague and there should be a peace and truth commission so the region can maybe have peace.

          If you have a dog in this fight, maybe they won’t be convicted. That’s why we have trials. But it’s been a war crime extravaganza so they’ll probably be convicted.

            How the fuck do you feel about a war where civilian and adults are kidnapped and starved, children take headshots (or worse), there will be no victors, and every “leader” is loathed by 70% of their population but use the war to cling to power? Do you think maybe we should use international law to prosecute the war criminals and try to create peace? Or do you think we should treat it like a sport where we root for our favorite team?

              Personally, I care about the whole of Subsaharan Africa more than the Middle East but I’d like to know why this is a very special situation where one side is good.

            There’s totally not a large military force inside Gaza made up of tens of thousands funded and armed by Iran, and hiding behind civilians to cause as much outrage as possible and make eliminating them incredibly difficult.

            You know, the ones that killed over a thousand Israelis on Oct 7th.

            The US killed about a half a million civilians in the middle east in response to 9/11.
