That’s absolutely insane. Never drill a hole through your tire treads.
Always drill through the side wall. Much more efficient.
Why?
Because if you drill through the side wall you’ll sever some of the steel reinforcement cables and render it irreparable. Drill through the treads and you might be able to plug it back up

So that you can put it back later, store the excess air somewhere safe, like a spare bucket
I’m no car scientist but I’ve done my research. I get my own air from rural areas, bag it up, and bring it home for my tires. Nothing but the best free range organic air goes into my vehicle.
GMO air is just as good as organic air, you hippie! I’m sick of all you wooden tree-huggers telling me how much better you are. I hug cell towers painted like trees and can feel how much it hums with love. In fact, my doctor says it’s causing my heart to swell, which is how I know my love is real! My doctor even told me I need to stop, but I know it’s just cuz he’s super jealous.

You need to put the hole in your sidewall for it to work properly.
