    tl;dr They almost made it a direct sequel to the first game.

    Akitoshi Kawazu, game designer for the first two games, went on to create the SaGa series and further refined the leveling system as part of that series.

    FF2 and the Legend / SaGa games are some of my favorite RPGs. I’m kind of glad they couldn’t stay in the main line.
