In my experience the red cups were used for mixed drinks being served by amateur bartenders (or jungle juice), or for kegs, or for drinking games. The latter was by far the most common - beer pong, slap/stack cup, etc. Often, people would rinse and reuse them to cut on waste and/or cost.
Why don’t people use the cans or bottles as they are like normal people do in every other country?
Usually they’re used when there’s either a keg or some sort of shared mixed drink/punch.
Or for drinking games.

If you need a cup for a mixed drink you get a fucking coffee mug from the kitchen cause it’s not made of glass. I am anti red cup gang as well.
lmao soooo many mugs at british parties, that or stolen beer glasses from the local pub
Going and getting cups for a party is a lot more planning than has gone into most parties I’ve attended.
There’s usually a crate of beer in the washing machine because people think it’s a good place to hide their stash so it doesn’t disappear too quickly.
