I love Lucky Luke. I should still have a stack of old comics somewhere around here, maybe it’s time to give them a read again.

By the way, did anyone here read the homage comics they released some time ago? Especially ‘The Man who shot Lucky Luke’, are they any good?

There are five official homages total, altho it’s possible there’s also some amateur and pastiche works, as with Tintin.

So, I found the ones by Bonhomme (“Wanted: Lucky Luke” & “The Man who shot Lucky Luke” to be utterly fantastic, partly because they breath all kinds of new life and possibility in to the character. Seriously, they’re pretty much movie-quality, which I never expected to see in LL.

And then there’s Mawil’s homage “Lucky Luke Saddles Up,” which was also great. That one was much more of the classic cartoony format, but was extremely funny and inventive in a way not usually seen in LL comics. Another one by Bouzard is “Jolly Jumper ne répond plus,” which seems really funny, but as I read French slowly, it’s something I’ll have to come back to.

The last one by Ralf König (“Swiss Bliss”), I thought pretty terrible and even disrespectful, as if the guy thought he could do whatever he wanted with the characters, completely ignoring the unwritten rules of the LL format. Haha, maybe I’m being a little harsh as a first reaction, tho.

In future I could possibly do a sampler of all five books as a separate post.

        Thanks for the detailed asnwer!

I saw “The Man who shot Lucky Luke” years ago and found the cover very intriguing, but somehow never actually bought it. Now I’m itching to get it and “Wanted: Lucky Luke”. Although I’d read an translation (as I have done sicne I was a kid) because I don’t speak even a bit of French. :D

English translations of the Bonhomme books are by Europe comics and Cinebook, if that helps.

Thanks, but I’ll read in German. Wanted to buy them with my local Comicbookstore, but they’re missing “The man who shot Lucky Luke”. I’ll get it from egmonton, who are the publisher for it in Germany. And issue #99 looks fun too, maybe I’ll also get that one.

Not the only question is: paperback like back in the day or the sturdier harcover for twice the price?

He’s got great skill and luck, except for when he foolishly underestimates an old friend.

How familiar are you with Euro graphic novels?

The sequence above is in reference to the fact that at the end of Lucky Luke albums, it’s the cowboy riding off in to the sunset, singing his song, on his horse.

Or if you scroll down to the one about the Smurfs, in reality there’s only one Papa Smurf (in red), and the rest are typically dressed in white. Hence, the gag about the costume party going wrong. (and yes, imagination clearly wasn’t their strong suit)

This one is just some panels of a Lucky Luke comic book. It’s a community for European graphic novels after all.
