So my default app for phonecalls doesn’t have spam filter or any info on callers. I downloaded truecaller, but it has a lot of ads. Ive been getting a lot more spam calls lately and i want to get a good app to separate important stuff from useless spam what do you recommend?

Also what are your funny stories messing with spam callers?

I have used it. mixed performance depending on your spam call profile, but it does help.

My Pixel 7 has a call screening function. It asks the caller to identify themselves and why they are calling and shows the dialogue on the screen. Very cool.

I started using “Yet another call blocker”. The community updates the database, the more calls you can identify and review on the web, the more effective it gets. You can get it on fdroid if you use android

I use Silence, but I’ve also heard good things about Yet Another Call Blocker. Both Android apps that are not dialers, but call filters to stop spam.

I honestly just switched to denying all calls automatically from anyone not in my contacts a long time ago. If anyone who isn’t in my contacts needs to reach me, they’ll follow up with an email or text.

I cant always afford to block all calls, so default I will use YACB, but also truecaller conjunction with it to Identify who called me, if the call wasn’t blocked, from there I will determine if I want to block the caller or call them back

I know Silence has an option for STIR verification (which I’m not very familiar with). I think government numbers and such can get through, but I’m not certain. Your solution is great for making sure people can still get through!

I’ve been pretty happy with the Samsung one tbh. It’s been good at catching spam.

I just block all callers except contacts. I mean in this era, communications for me is whitelist only except when I’m expecting a call from a number no in my contacts, then I turn off my call blockers and use the default spam blockers built into samsung (don’t really know how or if it works, but I rarely need to receive a call outside my contacts). So what I do is just pick up a call, say nothing, just listen. If what I hear doesn’t match my expected phone call, I just hang up. Any extra third party anti-spam apps might just falsely mark a phone call as spam, also, letting such apps monitor your phone calls has a privacy issue.

TLDR: Use whitelist only, unless expecting a call, then disable whitelist only mode. Don’t need 3rd party apps for rare occurences.
