Posting to Lemmy.world from Lemmy.ml results in only Lemmy.ml users being able to see that post, so I think they blocked each other. When do you think they will be federated again?

Lemmy.ml appears to be massively overloaded. Browsing their instance’s website results in network timeout errors. They haven’t applied the same fixes that lemmy.world has yet either. So, it’s not blocked, it’s just that lemmy.ml is currently unable to keep up with things.

A fix for this was introduced in 0.18 and another one in 0.18.1. Version 0.18.1 is in release client 4 now, and lemmy.world just updated yesterday. Lemmy ml is still on 0.18.0 and doesn’t have the 2nd fix yet. There are likely to be many causes to this, but consensus seems to be that federation has drastically improved since world upgraded to 0.18.1rc-4.

So, what to do? Just be patient. These are growing pains and known issues being tracked by devs and admins across instances. If Lemmy.ml and Lemmy.world wanted to defederate, they would do exactly that, instead of some silly shadow-defederation as you’re suggesting.

If you want to follow the issue on GitHub, here is the link:

It’s not just a bug in the code. There are some scalability issues at play. Federation breaks silently (as in the user experience doesn’t change) under heavy load. Lemmy.world came up with a solution, but Lemmy.ml has yet to do anything. Upgrading helps with similar and other issues but doesn’t completely solve the servers being overwhelmed.

I agree. I noticed these issues start when lemmy.ml made their server upgrade awhile back when things were still on 0.17.4. Ruud (lemmy.world admin) mentioned in his pinned post some specifics that he had to do in order to get it working. I trust that these patch work solutions are being communicated back to the devs and trust that they are working on it. The good news is that they needed the traffic to Lemmy to uncover these issues in order to then fix them. All in due time.

It could be federation buckling under the added weight of the new users from the sudden mass Reddit migration. The instances don’t seem to be defederated, and those lists are public as said above.

But federation failures from sudden increased load could explain it.

Edit: federated -> defederated, darn autocorrect

I believe it’s something akin to this. Give it some time for things to federate.

No, they aren’t blocked. You can verify this for yourself by visiting https://lemmy.world/instances and searching for the text “lemmy.ml” (left column means they’re connected, right column means they’re blocked, not appearing means the lemmy.world server doesn’t know that lemmy.ml exists)

You can also visit https://lemmy.ml/instances and search for the text “lemmy.world” just to check the block isn’t happening the other way around.

I agree with others that what’s happening is likely to be an issue caused by the vast number of new users that are joining Lemmy over the past few weeks (myself included!) - give it time, things will settle down. :)

Many federation things are broken atm. i know of Multiple communitys that are behind hours or Multiple days both on lemmy.world and Kbin the instance owner says their server got tons of recources free so its federation related bugs i guess.

maybe never, this is going to be a thing on and off with the large instances, get on a smaller one with a neutral rep and youll be able to interact with the whole fediverse as long as you don’t cross lines.

I just read this morning that someone is spamming the hell out of lemmy.world from what looks like an attempted DDoS run with a ton of communities with a bunch of random post with no actual content.

I’ll probably end up in a totally defederated instance or another platform altogether the way things are looking.
