I use the screen sharing feature on discord to watch movies with my friends but I would prefer a FOSS alternative. I’ve tried Element/Matrix with the Jitsi add on but it seems like you can’t share the audio using that and the app can be a bit buggy in general. Does anyone have any other recommendations?

As far as I know Matrix is the best FOSS alternative to Discord right now. Maybe try using the coturn addon for voice instead of Jitsi. I’ve been able to share audio snippets just fine this way.

I need to find a decent guide to Matrix, I was playing with it a couple of days ago and definitely found it confusing.

I checked it out but it seems like it doesn’t have a screen sharing option

Revolt is trying to be Discord clone, you can check them out, not sure how well they match feature wise. Matrix is close to being full replacement, but they are not there yet.

Revolt seems to be the most similar but unfortunately it doesn’t have a screen sharing option

If you’re watching movies with friends and want a FOSS alternative, Jellyfin is the way to go. It’s basically a way to host a media streaming center that others can connect to. It might be a bit overkill depending on your needs, but it’s great for that exact purpose. It doesn’t have chat or anything, though, so you’ll want to keep something else around for that.

Saved to follow later - FOSS or FediDiscord (FeDiscord?) would be awesome

I think Element is the closest but it still lacks some features from Discord

Yeah I decided to set up a Matrix Synapse server, it seems close but not quite there yet. Maybe soon, then I can rid myself of Discord

If you’re willing to try a different approach, Syncplay is pretty good. Rather than streaming a movie to your friends and hoping everyone has enough bandwidth to make it work, you arrange for everyone to have a copy of the movie, and then let Syncplay synchronize everyone’s playback.
