update: we’re compiling them now, new suggestions have about 4 hours to come in before i call it and lock the thread. thank you for all of your suggestions

following the defederations and given the inconvenience, it’s time for a new round of community solicitations so we can add possible ones to our survey!

to make this easier for us, please follow a few groundrules here:

  1. make your suggestions top level comments. do not reply to people with suggestions! they’ll probably get lost and i won’t get paged if you make them.
  2. try not to make your suggestions super specific, because we probably won’t do super specific ones
  3. try not to duplicate a suggestion once it’s already made (i know lemmy’s display isn’t great for this). while imperfect, if you like an idea please upvote it instead.
  4. this is not intended to be a general discussion thread, so please try to keep that to a minimum. i will prune comments as needed if i think they’re cramping the utility of this thread

additionally, we’ve already been suggested the following and those will be on the survey. i will prune any suggestion which is a duplicate of/is covered by one of these:

  • anime and manga
  • world news
  • tabletop gaming
  • vegan/vegetarian
  • education
  • parenting
  • camping
  • fitness

and for responsibility reasons we can’t really offer mental-health related communities past !neurodivergence@beehaw.org, so please don’t suggest those. thanks folks!

What about a series of local communities? Back on Reddit, I enjoyed participating in a subreddit for my local area. I don’t think Lemmy is quite there just yet (but hopefully one day will have enough users to support such localized communities), so how about a series of US State communities? Depending on intentional presence, this could be expanded into equivalent regions for other countries as well.

I’ve been grappling with thinking how the best implementation of this plays out for some time. I think in a perfect topological implementation of federation, moderately sized regional hubs would house lower sized social constructs. Midwest.social would have both state based and city based communities within the federation instance for example.

But that ideal probably causes both too much fragmentation of the already small and burgeoning community for the sake of placing things in neat packages.

In the interim, I guess we will have to make do with the formation of communities on whatever instances they spring up on. Feeling out the community creation vibe at beehaw however I don’t think geographic community based, er, communities are best suited for this instance vis-a-vis creating each newly provisioned community with the intent of measured growth to not create ghost towns that aren’t in use after a few months.
