The life of a chain is best measured in distance used rather than in time. Are you also riding in poor weather? Winter roads with destroy any chain. Up to 10speed a chain should last at least a few thousand kms in seasonal weather and several thousand if used only in good weather.

I can’t see why this setup wouldn’t work. I do favour a max of 36T with a smaller chainring up front. The shorter cage derailleur you can have the better. What you have here will work with a narrow wide chainring. You can space the BB for chainline :)

I have done this kind of thing before. Grab a 32T hollow tech single ring crankset, hollow tech BB and something like a 10 speed 12-32 or 12-36 cassette. This means you can use a better derailleur and better quality cassette (both being cheaper than if you bought 42t) and still be able to climb walls :)
