  • That mindset unfortunately leads you to being locked into vendor-specific ecosystems with no control about the software you’re using. The big vendors (MS, Apple) know this and have already started extracting more value (in form of data) from their users. Next step will be to put more stuff into their clouds and sell you a subscription. You’ll be renting software with included spyware then. With zero control yourself. Linux and FOSS gives you control back. It’s also quite easy to use in 2023.

  • NixOS has features that (almost?) no other distro has. This catapults Nix to the top tier of Linux distros, but it has a steep learning curve, even for Linux veterans. You have to learn a new way of configuring your system(s), a new scripting language, new tools, and how pkg mgmt works. All very different, but seemingly much better than it’s being done traditionally. NixOS also doesnt’ follow the FHS. GNU Guix is similar but I think NixOS is more interesting and capable. It’s also trending now

  • Technically there are still workarounds like disconnecting from the network or editing the installation sources, but it’s still anti-user and worse than in older versions. Win will continue to get worse over time. Look at a freshly installed, default W11 Home consumer desktop for example. What most people probably use. Just open the start menu. It looks like the OS needs an exorcism first, before you can use it. But maybe many people have already become used to things being this bad

  • I used it around the 2000s, it was great back then to get started and to learn about Unix and Linux in general. These days, it’s niche, but you also don’t hear negatives about it. So I think it’s still a viable distro, even though its lack of popularity is certainly a disadvantage (less info/resources, slower dev speed). But with additions like SlackBuilds it’s probably not that bad, but I don’t like recommending niche, because of potential maintenance issues. And it’s not a noob-friendly distro
