    Preseason ranking are based on returning players and recruiting class. A&M always has a good recruiting class they just never manage to do anything with them.

      Yeah, but at a certain point, that needs to be taken into account. Not that pre-season ranks necessarily matter, but it does play into what assumptions are made of other teams. This will presumably turn into a top 20 win for a conference opponent just based on “they had good recruiting”.
