I was once cussing at a stop and go driver, only for the driver to get out and point at her throat. She was choking on her toast. We got it cleared and she was okay.

Assholes seem to be more common than medical emergencies though.

Yeah I was that asshole a couple months ago. This van driver parked diagonally across my street, blocking traffic in both directions (note there was plenty of room since most people park in driveways, he was just lazy). He just got out and walked away, so I was pissed, leaning on my horn…… but he was a driver for the disabled and I had to watch him help an elderly person across the lawn to the van while I was honking.

I feel bad if the elderly person thought I was honking at her, but the asshole driver has never blocked the entire street again so maybe my behavior is vindicated

That must have been horrible, watching him slowly and deliberately move the old person across the yard, honking the whole time

How is saving someone’s life being an “asshole”?

Swearing at someone in your car isn’t being an asshole, it’s just venting. It’s not like they could hear it. If they were leaning out the window, then maybe. I’d say them doing the whole “saving their life” bit would make up for it either way.

My Favorite human phenomena is that most drivers will use the horn when their safety could have been secured by applying the brakes

Yeh it’s meant to be hazard warning. I try to make sure I use it for that purpose instead of an anger indicator. You should brake or do whatever maneuvers are necessary to avoid an accident as priority before thinking about the horn. That said it is useful to do in many of the same situations where the brakes ought also be applied. This is because you simultaneously want to avoid danger caused by the other driver through your braking while also getting them to realise that they’re causing danger and stop it. Hopefully both of those things will happen.

That’s why the horn uses a hand control and the brake uses a foot control

There are a lot of Main Characters around that deeply resent any impediment to their plans.

50% chance it’s just an asshole

50% chance they didn’t see you were putting air and wanted your car out of the way, thinking you were the asshole.
