I have yet to meet a marine veteran that isn’t a severally fucked up person. We don’t talk about how hard we fail on protecting our troop’s mental health but we sure love waving flags and calling them heroes.
I’m in a heavy military area. I was at a brewery recently speaking to someone (I don’t remember what branch) who was involved in the invasion. I didn’t ask if he specifically saw combat or anything, but he was a pretty cool dude. He recognized the issues and how bullshit the invasion was and why there are issues with recruitment after all of that. He seemed perfectly well adjusted to civilian life from what I saw and wasn’t brain-dead like the guy in the OP.
Many people in the military are there for a job with good benefits, not to go murder people. I don’t really think this should be the only way some people feel they can get out of their situation, but it is a fact that many do feel this way. You can not support the military while still supporting the people it exploits. Support workers in general. It’s probably a good idea.
The job description is quite literally either to murder people, or support those who murder people. There are no military jobs that are without blood on their hands, directly or indirectly.
Even if someone signed up for money and benefits, they signed up for a job specifically about murder.
even in the words of military recruiters themselves, they’ll say that every job, no matter what it is, is about “supporting the mission” (mission being murder, of course). and they’re not wrong about that. every single soldier has red hands.
No you literally cannot support members of the military while not supporting the military.
And the whole “didnt see combat” line is total horseshit.
You know what the people who didn’t see combat were doing? Signing off on reports that those 12 years olds were deffinitly enemy combatants and not civilians casualties and figuring out the logistics of how to get bullets from the factory into the heads of innocent farmers as quickly as possible.
I didn’t take a job at the torture factory because I like the suffering, I did it because I felt like I could take advantage of all the atrocities for personal gain

I think that’s pretty reductive… Most of the people who are indoctrinated by the military are like 17-19, it’s not exactly an environment that leads to free thought.
Even if they somehow are introduced to leftist materials in the military, it’s not like they can just leave. I think your statement reeks of privilege, and shows a deep misunderstanding of class consciousness.
Are we leftist because we want to sneer at those who lacked the educational environment to learn of leftism in the first place? Or, are we leftist because we want to join hands with other workers to displace those that call themselves our masters?
Well… If it’s the latter, can you think of a better comrade to link arms with, what better weapon is there to aim than a weapon forged by their own hand?

To be fair they deserve the mental health issues they suffer, it’s likely to be the only justice their victims receive
