Deus Ex: Human Revolution and its sequel Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was a great reboot of the series, but what do you think of the original Deus Ex?
It was a Game of the Year contender in 2000, but what about in 2024? Is it still worth playing? Or are the gameplay and graphics a bit too… dated.
If it’s still worth playing, are there any mods to help make the game more tolerable for today’s standards?
There’s an old meme that goes like this:
Deus Ex
Everytime you mention it, someone reinstalls it.
I think that speaks for itself.

I just uninstalled your copy.

Yes. Play it.
Yes, but without mods, non-lethal options are a joke to use. Some will probably disagree with me, but I’d recommend playing it with the Revision mod. It improves so many aspects of the gameplay, and just makes it feel less janky, and more modern (in good ways).
I saw the Revision mod listed on steam and was wondering if it would be worth using. Thanks!
Yes. Play it.
It’s a great game and you should play it, but it’s definitely an old game without a lot of the quality of life improvements afforded to us in the modern era.
Remember to save early and often, and also in multiple slots
My memory escapes me, but isn’t there a spot in the game where if you made a bad choice, it affects something a few hours later?
That’s the whole game! … But don’t sweat it about making ‘bad’ choices, I wouldn’t say there’s a correct route.
Definitely. Look up DXu24 which even extends and modernises the game and plans to offer really usable VR support for more immersion.
Yes. Play it.

Yes. Play it!
Funny enough, I started playing it last night.
Recently finished playing cyberpunk 2077 and this is the only game that comes close to that experience.
The Revision mod is the standard for modernising the graphics, the gameplay is still excellent. The player choice is fantastic and the game responds to how you play flawlessly.
Still one of the best games I’ve ever played.
I need to reinstall Deus Ex now
Thanks for bringing this up. I got a steam deck OLED and for some reason the OG Deus Ex was in my long-stagnant steam account. I think I bought it in college when I was playing around with windows partitions on Mac with boot camp. I guess now I can see about putting in a mod to modernize it a little and play it. I love playing older PC games that I never had access to in childhood.
As someone who played it when it was new…i dunno honestly. It’s a fantastic game. A lot of what it did has been learned by other games now, though.
I throw a few hi res textures on Morrowind and oblivion and play them through every couple of years. If the game is good, then it’s good.
Kind of? Without the rose tinted glasses I find HL2 hard to play. HL1 even more so
I haven’t tried to play hl1 again, but Morrowind is amazing and the modding community is amazing, I clock a good 200 hours every time, and I still went over a hundred thirty on a vanilla playthrough four years ago.
Just so I can say this as many times as possible since I’m still crazy about Morrowind, the modding community adds things in Morrowind like fantasy setting lamp posts between cities with ambient gradient light, high res night sky, or even just distance relative water sounds from rivers and waterfalls, small touches that make the entire game seem new.
Yeah
