The switch 2 is basically confirmed, a lot of journalists claimed there was a behind-doors showcase of it to people in the industry showing Zelda running a lot smoother.

I think everyone will be happy if it’s just the Switch again with higher specs. Backwards compatibility sounds great.

That’s what I’m hoping for as well. The Switch is a great console and the only thing it really needs is upgraded hardware.

Stick drift isn’t real, y’all just abuse your controllers 😂

Lol no. It’s a well documented design flaw/limitation with the cheaper analog stick design used in modern controllers, much like the design flaws in N64 joysticks that lead them to degrade over time.

These new joysticks work by two things (pretty sure it’s graphite pads) rubbing against each other directly. This results in increased wear and far earlier failure compared to the previously used hall effect design that used magnets to detect stick position, as that design has far fewer parts rubbing against each other.

For fucks sake, Nintendo even did a recall on joycons where you could send in busted ones and get them repaired for free. Do you really think they just willingly spent money doing that for something that was the consumer’s fault? Get the fuck out of here.

I’ve had SEVEN JOYCONS, ALL FROM DIFFERENT TIME PERIODS AND SELLERS. Stop treating tiny plastic sticks like they’re made of metal.

I’m hoping for this too. But knowing Nintendo, they’ll add some gimmick or innovation to it. It’s hard to imagine they’ll just release a more powerful Switch. Hopefully whatever they innovate with is fun and successful.

I’m fine with some weird 3D feature that i turn off all the time. That was the gimmick of the 3ds but i guess 3d is nothing they would add again. Anything that i just turn off is fine.

The 3D on the 3DS was a harmless gimmick because it could be turned off, and that’s what I always did, but I would have liked a cheaper version without it. I think they eventually did that with the 2DS XL.

Yes, but it’s very unlike Nintendo to just do a hardware bump with similar form factor; the closest I can think of was DS to 3DS, and that added stereoscopic 3D. So I’d expect some kind of new feature to go with it.

Right, aside from the Game Boy / Pocket / Color line lasting twelve years, and the DS / Lite / DSi / 3DS / New 3DS lasting thirteen years. They almost never just incrementally improve their money-printing handhelds, assuming we’re talking specifically about the three years where the Game Boy Advance got a whole new form factor every eight months.

I suppose you’re trying to be very clever, but you’re missing the point. None of the Game Boy or DS revisions were more powerful. Game Boy and Game Boy Color aren’t the same console (mostly). DS and 3DS aren’t the same console. Game Boy Color was an incremental improvement with the same form factor, 3DS more so.

No one is talking about the Switch 2 being a minor form factor revision with the same power. Obviously we’ve already had those within the Switch line. They’re talking about a new, backwards-compatible console.

Also I was avoiding drawing on examples from 20-30 years ago.

Game Boy Color was an incremental improvement with the same form factor, 3DS more so.

Why did you frame this agreement as if it’s a counterpoint?

The GBC had twice the CPU power, more memory, and a bunch of developer-friendly features nobody normal would care about.

            DSi added cameras and microphones.

3DS was a bigger upgrade, ostensibly a whole different console, but even that got the New 3DS as a line-blurring incremental improvement.

Drastic change has been the exception… not the rule. It is very like Nintendo to just do a hardware bump with similar form factor. They’ll milk any portable that’s still selling well. In fact, they only did the GBC because they got spooked by the Neo Geo Pocket, and they only did the DS because the PSP was a massive leap beyond the GBA. In the absence of direct competition they will drag out mere numeric improvements for over a decade. I don’t expect they consider phones and Steam Decks to be direct competition.

This. However, redesigned Joycons would be must while maintaining compatibility with existing ones. I want to still be able to use my Nyxi Hyperion Pros.
