S5E16 “TGS Hates Women”
Original scene/joke:
I’m not 100% clear on Voyager’s behind the scenes history, but even if she was hired as a mid-series fan-service ratings booster, Ryan added a LOT of good story lines and could act circles around the rest of the cast. The only two comparable were Mulgrew and Picardo, and two of those three were often leading the best episodes.
She was actually a very capaple actress, but in the beginning her writing was terrible, just ‘bikini borg babe’.
It was the opposite of Terry Ferrell who had great writing at the beginning which petered out in the middle.
I believe she was added just because some executive producer (no idea who that could have been) wanted to add a “sexy Borg babe”. But as you said, she ended up doing such a great job that she became one of the highlights of the series.
Really wish I Could Know who to BlamE foR MAking womeN uncomfortable.
If only I had my secret decoder ring…
Whereas Jolene Blalock was a fine actor, but never really rose much more above ‘sexy Vulcan’ in terms of writing. She had the good episode here and there, but they never really wrote her out of the ‘decontamination gel’ hole they put her in.
And that’s why people remember Seven fondly and are relatively ambivalent about T’Pol.
they never really wrote her out of the ‘decontamination gel’ hole they put her in.
That’s not entirely accurate. They did put her in the captain’s chair in one episode…but also made her wear a crop-top uniform. Yeah, your point stands.
but also made her wear a crop-top uniform.
Stupid sexy Terran Empire…
I love Ryan and she definitely came into her own with great acting, but initially she wasn’t as great an actor. BUUUT that totally worked because she was Borg so her wooden acting was perfect for the role! And as she improved as an actress that came off as 7of9 becoming more human.
IIRC there was a late season episode where different parts of Voyager were stuck in different time periods and 7of9 was supposed to be her original Borg self and Ryan had such a massive problem with it because she’d essentially forgotten how to be a bad actor.
I love Seven.
Fuck Rick Berman.
Perhaps the Borg would have better success assimilating if all of the Borg were sexy Borg babes/dudes.
“If you join the collective, you will be surrounded by sexy Borg babes.”
“Nice!”
“We will also replace your genitals with an advanced shield emitter.”
But cuddles are on the table?
And if you know that episode of 30 Rock (Spoilers), the Jeri Ryan parallels are even deeper, if a lot less fun.
Are the parallels just that
30 Rock Spoiler
Abbi/Jeri both had an ex husband? The article makes it out to sound like the Ryan divorce was not due to abuse or anything like that.
It’s certainly not one-to-one, to be fair, but it also seems like he was quite the piece of work.
spoiler
“Jeri Lynn told me that she was tired of being told what to eat, how to sit, what to wear, tired of being criticized about her physical appearance and told to exercise,” Zimmermann said.”
“In his Monday press conference, Jack Ryan acknowledged that he had been too controlling and expressed regret. “There are a number of things I could do better,” he said.”
And within the docs themselves: “She stated that the Paris sex club made her physically ill, and that she lost attraction for Ryan when he told her ‘it was not a ‘turn-on’ for me to cry.’”
It also sort of awkwardly recontextualizes an old interview she did: “In the spring of 1998, the Los Angeles Daily News asked Jeri Ryan if Seven of Nine was her alter ego. She laughed. ‘My husband wishes it were,’ she said. ‘He thinks she’s the perfect woman, meaning she looks good in a cat suit, is efficient and always on time.’”
OMG Abby Grossman is in The Penguin… Same character energy.
I think Jack would be more likely the one to be forcing Liz to add a sexy cyborg to the cast.
Probably even talk about her breasts. Maybe compare hers to his secretary’s like a certain other someone.
I used to enjoy this sub when it was startrek based. Now every meme involves some other show. Kinda defeats the purpose.
Cross over episodes alway suck, they’re worse than clip shows.
I have no problem with crossovers that can stand up on their own without the audience needing to have a background knowledge of all the source material involved. But I appreciate the input.
It’s okay, I know I’m being a grump, and you don’t have to feign appreciation. You can say “Hey I’m out here making and finding shit to post here! I’m showing my humor - wtf are you doing here you sponge!”… And I accept those facts are impartial and true.
I mean that I appreciate when people explain their dissatisfaction as opposed to simply downvoting without a clear reason.
