A, the usual “We are sorry ^(we ^got ^caught)”
Well, at least it wasn’t “we are deeply sorry; here, let me change nothing for you and ignore any comlplaints”.
But it was so obviously “we are sorry that you have enough power to hurt us” that I don’t expect anybody to change how react to it.
Did they change anything substantial, or just walk it back part of the way to where they wanted to go anyway?
They fixed all the huge problems. IMO, the result is a quite reasonable deal, I wouldn’t mind taking it at all if it was the first offer.
Still, I wouldn’t use anything from Unity today.
I’m speaking as a gamer here, an end user. I’m done with Unity. I will never purchase a game made in Unity whose development began after 9/11/2023. I don’t want to be a customer of a studio who watched this happen and says “Yeah we’ll keep doing business with this company.” So I shall not. I have spoken.

Don’t Forgot
To explain what I think it ultimately means, Pokemon games have been using Unity (I think) and we also know Nintendo tends to be the scariest with legal teams so… even if other big names also pressured, the meme is singling out Nintendo.
Everyone forgets that Nintendo has Disney-level lawyers.
They just hide it better with a smiley Mario and distracts everyone with go-karts.
Disney has a mouse they can hide behind, but they don’t. If they think you’ll make money off three circles in a certain pattern you’ll hear from their lawyers. Nintendo is very slightly more easy going. That’s why it’s easy to forget.
Nintendo likes to copyright strike a bunch of stuff on YouTube every so often just to remind everyone that they can.
Why is Nintendo holding a gun to the GameCube?
Um, Aurora Borealis?
Can I see it?
No
A- AURORA BOREALIS?
AT THIS TIME OF YEAR,
AT THIS TIME OF DAY,
IN THIS PART OF BEEHAW,
LOCALIZED ENTIRELY WITHIN THIS THREAD?
Their public announcement yesterday, for anyone who didn’t get a chance to see it yet.
I have to say, I love the fact they got a “reject all cookies” button just next to accept all. In today’s internet, this is truly a rare treat.
How did Nintendo play any role in this situation?
In their initial release of their updated license crap, there was a statement at some point saying something along the lines of “we’ll get the big game companies to pay this fee for some of the developers”, which I’m assuming went over like a lead balloon just as soon as the Nintendo/Sony/MS legal teams recovered from their temporary laughter-induced paralysis.
This reminds me of when Elong Muskrat tried to bully Apple for more money. And Tim Cook was like, “Let’s take a walk.” and Musky boy folded so fast.
I try to ignore Elon as much as possible, so I hadn’t heard this, but man that’s pretty funny.
I would say Microsoft honestly just for the fact they tried to say MS would have to pay for every gamepass game made in Unity that gets downloaded.
When I heard that either there was gonna be some quick quiet talks or I’d read that MS has bought Unity outright in a few days.
I think it’s still unconfirmed, but the rumors are that some of the big names stepped in to pressure Unity to reverse their decisions.
Don’t worry, the will come back in a few years, they know they can’t bully te bigger ones, but the small ones will have to take it.
All developers, even if it’s hard should move away from Unity.
