This goes to show how hard it is to put a rich whiteorange? man in prison. The whole system failed at every turn and there’s STILL the chance he might become president again…ain’t that something?

Yep, this is sooo stupid. They will not jail a former president, even the Dems in power now wouldn’t want that, as much as they’re against the red team they’re all in the elite team and arresting one of their own and jailing them would mean the rest are vulnerable. Shits not going to happen.

You do not want a civil war in this country, the majority of the military is made up of one side, and the majority of firearms are also held by one side. It would not turn out like a vast majority of liberals think.

Edit: someone has pointed out that this sounds like I’m part of the right wing group, but I’m pointing out moreso that the majority of the military and gun owners in this country are conservatives. Not trying to make some statement of who would win, but pointing out that it wouldn’t be pretty at all.

That’s not what they said, context matters.

They’re saying we should not want or hope for any kind of civil war of any kind; meaning not limited to Trump, any triggers in the future.

The military itself does not often or have to align up with the majority or to the ethnics that we believe they should abide to.

In other words, a civil war does not guarantee anything; it can backfire horribly wrong on anyone thinking that it would spur some kind of a positive thing. It can just as well turn US into a Nazi-state easily for an example.

Yep, thanks for clarifying it. I hear it from a lot of liberals and even from Biden acting like a civil war would be easily won by the “good guys” side. It doesn’t work like that at all.

Where did I say it would? I was pointing out the fact that the majority of the military are not liberal leaning people.

Get your head out of the sand, a civil war in this country would not go well for one side. FFS you’re neighbors with people you actively hate because of their political beliefs…do you think a bomb isn’t going to level your home as well when those start falling?

PS, I’m a liberal, I just am not a delusional one, and I am a strong 2A supporter. So you can fuck off with the right wing shit.

Calm down there man. I am not a right winger, and apparently I mistakenly took your comment out of context. The overwhelmingly majority of the time online that I see someone saying the military is one sided, they are referring to it being for the right. The structure of your sentence makes it sound like a caution or possibly a threat that the military will back the right. Based on the downvotes you’re getting, I apparently am not the only taking it this way.

I absolutely agree a civil war would be devastating, but I don’t see it happening. My take is once Trump is convicted the media will finally feel they have the freedom to make their separation they’ve been saying they wanted to do in private for years, but have been too scared to make.

I am a gun owning liberal who is against the NRA.

As much as the dem elites hate him, he’s still part of the elite club and they can’t be prosecuting their own.

Unfortunately that’s the more likely outcome here. No sitting or former president has ever done time. Grant being the exception for speeding in a wagon, and even that is doubtable and doesn’t have much to back it up as factual.

You insight violence. You try to take over the Capitol with your army of maggots. You steal nuclear secrets. You are a puppet for Putin and after all that the government is offering up a goddamn deal?!?

He should be stripped of his fancy suit, forced to put on prison orange and his mug shot should be plastered all over the news. There should be no deal for a crime lord. The fact that it might even happen, just proves how much some people in government just don;t get the seriousness of this situation. That entire family needs to be taken down. Start with his kids and finish it by throwing Don into prison for treason. In fact prison is better than traitors deserve.

Reddit’s ban system is part of why I’m here. Got banned from sub for some bullshit reason. Months later I forgot. Tried to post under new account… sitewide ban. Essentially some belly lint eating idiot banned my primary email from reddit forever lol. All they have to do is not let you post in that sub ever again. But yeah that stupidity is characteristic of how they handle everything.

Your story has happened to a ton of other people.

They don’t care about banning folks because as a social media site all they care about are numbers. Facebook’s stock was rocked a while back when its member count went down. Reddit’s number go up because people who get banned usually just start a new account. To Reddit management, that now means they have 2 isers when they try to sell ad space. It’s all a big scam because they are trying to drive up their numbers for their upcoming IPO.

I just don’t know how Lemmy works with bans and stuff.

One of my first posts on here was one where I hoped that Lemmy moved to a temporary-only ban system. Except for egregious cases (endless spam, etc), ban someone for 6 or 12 hours and that’s it. By that time most people have cooled off and most threads have died down by then. If the person was trying to be a troll, the ship has passed, and people’s attention have moved to the next hot topic.

Very good points I hadn’t considered. I should think though they’d be best served not perma-banning that email address in those regards. Simply filter out any posts I try to make to that sub, and if I really wanted to post to that sub THEN I would make a new email, and new reddit account. That would yield two accounts.

This is such a stupid and irresponsible article.

First, Trump has to be found guilty.

Second, he has to be found guilty before the elections.

Third, he has to lose the election (which is more or less a toss-up), because if he wins the election, he’ll pardon himself on all federal charges.

Fourth, even if all of that other shit happens, he has to be ordered to report to jail immediately after sentencing, without waiting for an appeal that will certainly be attempted.

This relies on so many things happening in just the right order that it’s functionally speculation.

If Putin “accidentally” hits a NATO target while trying to strike Ukraine, and if NATO responds in kind, and if Putin reacts to NATO’s response by launching nuclear weapons, and if NATO countries respond by launching a full-scale nuclear attach on Russia, then the world will have global thermonuclear war and humanity will have solved human-created climate change via nuclear winter! Yeah, it’s all possible, but it’s not probable.

Let’s throw some more logs on this fire….

Donald Trump has been charged with 37 criminal counts covering seven different violations of federal law

      The election is nov 2024

The trial starts in august 2023

There are at least 10 other candidates running for republican

The NYS charges are a joke. Yes, it’s a crime, but it’s also the kind of thing that would normally get pled out to the level of a parking ticket if it was a one-off thing. Which this appears to be. (One-off, in this case, meaning that they don’t have multiple instances to charge him with.) It looks political, because it probably is. Jail time is incredibly unlikely, even if the case wraps prior to the election.

Fani Willis here in GA will have a pretty solid case, assuming that the grand jury indicts (which is probable). But that case will probably get bumped in favor of the federal charges, and would be unlikely to go to trial, and be concluded prior to the election. And if Trump wins prior to the trial being concluded, then a conviction won’t matter. Yeah, he can’t pardon himself from state charges, but he’s not going to prison while he’s in office.

It will be interesting what happens if Trump primaries during the trial, gets picked up for the Republican nomination, then gets convicted and sent to prison. Does it just go to the #2 in the primaries? Will the right galvanize behind their second choice? Will a bunch of Forever Trumpers be upset enough to just not vote? With Trump out of the race, will the Left have enough momentum without Trump as the villain to vote against (yeah, I get the alternative is DeSantis, who is not exactly popular with anyone who doesn’t think Romney is a Leftist)?

Should be interesting if he ends up convicted.

he has to lose the election (which is more or less a toss-up)

I don’t see how Trump wins in 2024. He lost, badly, in 2020 and that’s with the incumbent advantage. Now Biden has the incumbent advantage and isn’t restricted to campaigning from his basement because some asshole fucked up the response to a pandemic. Meanwhile Trump is hemorrhaging cash paying for lawyers to defend him from multiple ongoing and imminent criminal indictments. He’ll find time to hold his stupid rallies every couple of days but he will be distracted and unfocused (even for Trump). He’s performed worse than the last time every election since 2016 (2018 lost the house, 2020 lost the presidency and the senate, 2022 all his favored candidates lost and Rs didn’t get the Senate back and barely won the House).

The 2024 race is Biden’s to lose and unless there’s some sort of health issue that takes him out or there’s a huge scandal that actually has some substance to it, I think he walks away with it.

Straw polls are pretty close right now. While I like to hope that Biden would win, since Biden has been pretty innocuous–not good, not bad, just more of the same normalcy that we had prior to Trump–that’s just not a sure thing.

I think it’s more the pandemic that contributed to the Democrats winning the presidency, also the margins are so small with most voters locked in. Hopefully Trump doesn’t pull through but I doubt the Rs are picking anyone else to run. Historical chances usually the incumbent wins.

i hate biden so much for fucking my life so permanently that the perverse side of me wants trump to win because my career and financial stability has improved DRAMATICALLY, directly because of trumps actions when he was president.

i’m not going to vote for biden and will do everything in my power to advocate for voting against biden to everyone i know (and i’ve recently been deeply touched to learn that it works because they know and care for me on a personal level); but this time i won’t hold it against them if any for trump.

I’m curious. Can you explain how exactly Biden being president has fucked your “life so permanently”?

Also, how did your career and financial stability improve DRAMATICALLY solely because of Trump?

copy/pasted from previous interaction: *he supported doma, dont-ask-dont-tell, and spearheaded permanent student loan debt.

so when i graduated high, school military service was not an option because because of don’t-ask-don’t-tell and my parents were migrant farm workers who had no provisions for me. so the only option left to me was to go to college where i racked up enough permanently undischargable student loan debt that grew exponentially between the 2008 and covid collapses thanks to biden’s student loan debt bill. I’ll be paying for it for the rest of my life as a result.

between 2008 and covid, i wanted to marry another immigrant who had no legal status and, thanks to doma, i couldn’t marry and sponsor him so he got deported. he moved on and got married when it was politically convenient for biden to decide that gay marriage was okay and i’m too old of an incouragable fart to date.*

And my financial stability improved because his dipshit unilateral embargoes and actions forced companies to react and I’ve been one of the beneficiaries of those reactions at a time when it was clear that my industry was turtling to protect their bank accounts.

Trump presided during a time of relatively stable economic recovery shortly after the last speculative bubble burst. I don’t believe the two major parties are that different on the economic front, they’re basically supported by the same donors and none of their policies really affect the status quo. For the US voter they offer a choice between different culture war factions, which is basically how it’s been since Reagan.

Oh yeah, the economy. Whether or not it’s his fault, Biden will most likely be held ‘guilty’ by the court of public opinion for the current economic crisis.

…But they aren’t. Trump currently leads in polls for the Republican nomination by something like 30 points over DeSantis (who I think would be even worse than Trump). The next closest contender, Vivek Ramaswamy, is currently polling in the single digits.

Moreover, the people that vote in primaries do not look like the people that vote in general elections; primaries are going to attract people with the strongest political feelings, and those tend to be Trump loyalists.

And finally, Republican primaries are won by plurality, not majority. Trump won the primaries in 2016 by consistently winning 35% or so of the vote, with three other candidates splitting the rest. Even if Trump was the last place candidate by the remaining 65% of Republican primary voters, he still won because he was the first choice for 35% or so. If Republicans did ranked-choice primaries, he’d probably lose. But they don’t, and they won’t.

You’re right, but he cannot (or at least is VERY unlikely to) win a general election, which is why the Reds are freaking out. They can’t win a National election with nothing but a rabid base and The Stain turns off all demographics except MAGA losers.

Per my prior comment, in straw polls, Biden and Trump are pretty closely matched. Trump has a larger unfavorability rating (which is good if you don’t want him re-elected), but their favorability ratings are pretty damn close. Definitely way too close for me.

I’m not a Biden fan; I’d much rather see Cornell West running as the Democratic nominee, rather than as a Green (not that he’s electable, given Republicans). But I would far, far rather see Biden than Trump. Neither one gets the country where it needs to be, but Trump is actively working to make the country worse. If people think that Trump doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning–which is what happened in 2016–then they’ll get complacent. Every goddamned person in this country needs to understand that Trump is an existential threat, much like the heat dome over 1/2 of the US.

We’re definitely seeing that in the conservative bubble; that why anyone that wants to be in serious contention for the Republican nomination has to say that it’s a “witch hunt”.

Personally, I wish it was; I’d love to see Trump pressed with stones until he confessed.

I think that every day until I realize 1/3 of the population would still vote for him without a second thought. It’s been far beyond sad and pitiable for years now.

Now it’s simply malicious and a direct threat to every single one of our lives. The other 2/3rds need to start treating it as such.

The culling of Trump voters during the pandemic and the rise of Gen Z and Gen Alpha voters who are sick of this shit will hopefully tilt the scales in favor of Biden. I would genuinely worry if Biden died and Harris took over, though.

By the way, since this is Kbin and not Reddit, fuck the Trump voters who died because they were too stupid to take precautions during the pandemic. We’re all better off without you. Fewer potential Wal-Mart shooters as far as I’m concerned.

I just wish they hadn’t taken out so many innocent people in the process. I attended 3 funerals because of the virus and a friend of mine is now a brain damaged shell of what he once was. Some reason the latter bothers me more. Maybe because I have to just sit there and hear him start screaming about groomers while gently leading him back to “have you thought about going back to work?”. I miss him.

Oh, there’s always a deal, at least for him. The rules do not apply evenly to start with, and even though he’s not that rich, he’s still part of the aristocracy.

Even though he broke all sorts of laws that contain the words “betrayed your nation to foreign adversaries”, started a sloppy coup last time he lost an election, and basically bragged about it in between perjuring himself, the best solution for everyone is for him to quietly fade into irrelevance.

It’s always better not to make a martyr if you can help it, it just isn’t worth it

Plus, the cruelest punishment I can think of is letting him use up the last couple years of his charismatic energy out of the public eye, so when he inevitably comes back he’d reveal himself to be the rambling dementia patient he’s been for a while.

And I don’t mean that as an insult - read his speeches. His delivery is amazing. Take that away and just read them (especially from the most recent ones), and even if you realized he was spewing word salad it’s still shocking

He needs the Napolean treatment – exile and blockaded.

While it isn’t really feasible to drop him off on an unnamed tropical island and leave him there, just sticking him in a prison cell and cutting off his access to the media (both traditional and social) is how you end a tyrant. You demonstrate to anyone still watching that the tyrant is powerless, and then you let them rot away and die alone.

Execute them, and you create a martyr. Let them go, pardon them, go light on the prison sentence, and you just signed up for another insurrection in a few years.

I’m not underestimating him as much as I know there are other things in play today that were not in play then. The Republicans won’t nominate him. There would be too much fallout later. They will lose all footing in the future if they did that. And there has not been any president that won, lost, then won again.
