This, I’ve known people who got knocks on their door by the FBI and SS for posting dumb shit they weren’t serious about as a “joke.” They take that shit seriously I guess only when its lone wolves that can’t do as much damage and not people rich enough to fund a small army.

Isn’t the straightforward answer to his question that people don’t want Harris or Biden dead enough to put themselves at risk of death or arrest?

Why be baffled when the answer is obvious?

The correct response is for thousands of people to respond on Xitter with, “And no one is even trying to assassinate Musk 🤔”

Which would be worse for him: someone actually trying to do so as a result of said post, or realizing that no one wants to because no one cares enough about him?

Fellas, is it a crime to advocate for the assassination of the current vice president?

Because that could be another one of Donald’s charges. Just saying.

      Biden/Kamala

Not just the current vice president. The current President of the United States.

Easy to forget in this lunacy of an election campaign, but Biden is still president.

no, but it’ll kill your career to joke about the assassination of a former president, because in this country we believe in double standards.

Conservatives love the quote “the shrub of freedom needs to be watered with the blood of parrots from a time to another time”, so they’ve got a healthy dosage of normalizing violence.

They also LARP about Rome, which had a long and storied tradition of assassination. Famously, citizens of the republic were encouraged to strangle anyone who tried to become King… right up until they didn’t.

Anyway, the Romans weren’t always monsters; they just usually were.

The United States is the truest successor to Rome, just the Roman republic. While others called themselves czar or Kaiser, we completely failed to create a functioning society but failed upwards by dint of knocking everyone else down

Typically the first amendment is going to protect you when you say most things. The types of things you definitely don’t want to say are specific threats.

But there was a sad situation in Colorado where the courts ruled that a guy could be locked up for saying that he wished that bad things fell upon some judges, even though he definitely didn’t say or imply that he was going to do them. So if you want to rely on the Colorado precedent, maybe there’s something to work with, but it’s a pretty terrible precedent.

That all being said, let’s not wish death on anyone. Even if it’s someone who’s done horrible things, let’s just wish that they’re forced to retire early and either get locked up in prison, if they committed crimes, or live out there lives in miserable condition in some community that we never have to visit or think about.

The big thing seems to be “is there reason to believe that the person saying this believes it will cause people to illegally act in accordance”. I’m some lady on the internet, if I say Nazis should be punched I don’t think I’m going to convince anyone to actually do it, instead I think I’m contributing to a cultural milieu of hostility towards fascists. Elon musk has fans, he has a legitimate platform. He has every reason to think someone might shoot the vice president over this, especially since he’s calling to the same group that has already attempted to shoot the other presidential candidate twice in three months, and particularly because that group in question is people who voted for that guy.

Jokes have setups and payoffs. Humor is the subversion of the expectation and Musk’s tweet has nothing resembling that.

Yeah i can imagine theres a definition he isnt meeting for him to call it a joke. Im saying i think he truly believes he wasnt being serious. I think he was being edgy and sarcastically accusing democratic elite of an assassination attempt.

And i would expect someone to follow up with how irresponsible that is, and that it still doesnt fit the webster definition of a joke. Please understand that im an imperfect human being who was giving their opinion about their perception of musks intention based on very little context.

Sometimes its impossible to post a comment of your own opinion when it could potentially be percieved as going against what is objectively morally right… when really there is no deeper meaning than my perception.

You might think he’s being edgy. Hell, he might think(if he ever thinks) he’s being edgy, but out of the numerous people who blindly follow him, how many do you think need to take him seriously and take him up on the suggestion.

There are jokes you can make to a private group of friends that you can’t make to over a million people unless you really mean it. It doesn’t help that twitter has a short character limit on messages. You simply cannot have a nuanced opinion on that site and need to consider that when making posts there.

I get why you would see someone calling it a joke and want to punish that because it was not funny and potentially dangerous.

But it can both be true that he was trying to make a joke, and that he was grossly irresponsible doing so.

You are telling me what i believe (that it wasnt a big deal) and im sorry but this reactive extrapolation of information that is constant and pervasive on sites like lemmy is something i hate and anyone can say im taking it too seriously but it keeps people from engaging/thinking instead of memeing.

Please define punishment in the context. Is criticizing Musk punishment?

But it can both be true that he was trying to make a joke, and that he was grossly irresponsible doing so.

What’s the point you’re trying to arrive at? Where he’s making jokes or making stochastic terrorist comments, I can criticize him either way.

You are telling me what i believe (that it wasnt a big deal)

Everyone is coming to that conclusion. If you think everyone is misinterpreting your comments, that’s because you are not a good communicator. I do not have the same problems as you.

I dont see that as a call for people to assassinate biden, but a sarcastic accusation that democrats are trying to assassinate trump.

Listen i know most comments are trying to voice a grander opinion but mine is simply a genuine belief that he was being an edgy dumbass who didnt consider how much influence he has over dumb people that might see it as a call to action of some kind.

Why are you getting so pissy when people respond to the comments that no one forced you to make.

So nowhere in that response do you say how it’s a joke. At best it’s a baseless accusation that democrats are trying to assassinate Trump, flying in the face of all evidence that the people going after him are Rebuplicans. At worst it’s a call for assassination of the democratic candidates.

I don’t think you’re a disinformation agent. I think you’re either a Elon nuthugger or a useful idiot uncritically parroting Elon while ignoring everything he’s said and done for the past few years. Maybe both.

Funny enough, two posts away from this one it sure sounds like someone is threatening Harris’ life.
